As the war in Ukraine marks its third devastating year and the conflict in Israel continues to unfold, the reality for orphans, refugees, and alumni of TiKVA Children’s Home is unlike anything we’ve faced before.

Ilya’s family lived in Bakhmut, a city ravaged by war. They stayed as long as they could—until the unthinkable happened. Just weeks before Ilya turned six months old, a rocket struck their home. By sheer luck, he was in another part of the house and escaped injury, but their home was destroyed.

The trauma was overwhelming. Ilya’s mother suffered a severe brain injury, leaving the family desperate for help. That’s when TiKVA stepped in. We quickly relocated them and ensured Ilya’s mother received critical care at a neurological clinic while his father took on the role of primary caregiver for a brief period.

But the dangers of war were never far behind. In March 2023, Ilya’s father was drafted into the war and TiKVA stepped in to helped again—this time moving Ilya to the safety of Odessa. Today, Ilya lives in TiKVA’s care. He attends our kindergarten, where he plays with new friends, learns, and laughs like any child should, despite the hardships he’s already endured. The older children at TiKVA Children’s Home care for him and look after him, while he forms secure, bonded attachments with his classmates and reaches all age-appropriate milestones as he approaches three years old.

Living amongst 27 new orphans since 2024, TiKVA continues to provide them with everything they need—housing, support, and hope for a brighter future. We are dedicated to the ongoing critical work of rescuing, loving and providing essential needs to those still behind in the war zone of Ukraine. Despite increased costs, inflation and difficulty obtaining consistent resources compared to pre-war times, this lifesaving mission continues. With your help today, we can be the hope children like Ilya desperately need to not only survive, but thrive in the face of this reality.
